Saagara, who said the IGP would be killed on the road, was subdued and sent home.

Kaduwela Chief Magistrate Aruna Indrajith Buddadasa ordered the release on bail of Mr. Sagara Kariyawasam, the General Secretary of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and former Member of Parliament, who was arrested based on a statement made regarding Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya.

He was arrested on the morning of August 10th when he came to give a statement to the Central Criminal Investigation Bureau, in connection with allegations that a statement threatening the Inspector General of Police was made at a press conference held on August 3rd. Based on complaints made by the Inspector General of Police as well as three chief incumbents of temples, charges were filed under several sections of the Penal Code, and the police requested the court to remand the suspect until August 24th for further investigations.

At the said press conference, Mr. Sagara Kariyawasam had stated that three former Inspectors General of Police had faced a tragic fate under a Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna government, and that the current Inspector General of Police should stop serving the government and serve the public. Mr. Kariyawasam had also stated that he hoped the IGP would not go down in history as the 37th Inspector General of Police to die from being beaten by people on the street. Commenting on this, Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, had stated that at a time when the Inspector General of Police is working to suppress the underworld and drugs, this statement made by the General Secretary of a political party was a serious one, made deliberately and with a plan.

Submissions by both parties regarding the suspect, who was produced before the Kaduwela court in the afternoon, concluded at 4:30 PM, and after nearly three hours, the Magistrate issued the 17-page bail order. The Magistrate questioned the police's failure to substantiate the charges filed in court, stating that charges such as aiding and abetting and attempted acts cannot be sustained independently, and that the charges were not clearly implied by the facts presented.

President's Counsel Sampath Mendis, appearing for suspect Sagara Kariyawasam, pointed out that there was no death threat anywhere in the said statement, and that all charges were bailable. Here, the court's attention was drawn to the civilized language that a political leader should use and the seriousness of the statement, and the defense lawyer, after consulting the suspect, proceeded to express regret to the Inspector General of Police regarding the statement.

The Magistrate, having considered all the facts presented, ordered the release of the suspect on two personal bails of Rs. 2 million each, and also ordered the Immigration and Emigration Department to be informed to ban his foreign travel. Furthermore, the Magistrate ordered the Central Criminal Investigation Unit to submit the progress of the investigations related to the incident to the court on September 24th.
