Chamika's body, who died after being assaulted in Abu Dhabi, brought home through the intervention of the Prime Minister.

The body of 25-year-old Chamika Ishan Liyanage, a resident of Ethgala, Gampola, who unfortunately died due to an assault in Abu Dhabi, has been brought back to the island following the immediate intervention of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. The deceased was a young man who had left for Abu Dhabi for foreign employment two years and ten months ago with the aim of securing his future.

On July 14th, Chamika's mother, who was working in Singapore, received a phone call from his friend stating that Chamika had fallen ill and been hospitalized. However, the very next day, the same friend called again to inform her that he had passed away, leaving the family in deep distress. Mr. Asanka Bandusena, the deceased young man's uncle, who took action regarding this matter, inquired for information from the agency that sent the young man abroad, but the agency attempted to evade responsibility by stating that the contract period had expired.

Subsequently, steps were taken to forward information to the Bureau of Foreign Employment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The mother and relatives, who immediately returned to the island from Singapore, prepared the necessary legal documents and attempted to contact the authorities in Abu Dhabi, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the distressed family members sent a WhatsApp message to Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and although it was later deleted, the Prime Minister's attention was drawn to it. Following her instructions, the Prime Minister's Secretary intervened to expedite the process of bringing the body back.

The body, which was brought to the island on July 29th through the efforts of the Prime Minister and the Ministry, was sent for examination via the Katunayake Airport Police and Negombo Hospital. The post-mortem examination and the order from the Negombo Magistrate revealed that the death was caused by severe blunt force trauma to the head resulting in blood clotting, and injuries to several parts of the body. A Sri Lankan national has been arrested by the Abu Dhabi Police on suspicion of involvement in the assault, and after all legal procedures, Chamika's final rites were performed yesterday (10) at the Thembaligala cemetery.
