Activities at the University of Moratuwa have been temporarily suspended after a group of students contracted dengue fever. Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education, Dr. Madura Senewiratne, stated that this decision was made yesterday (06) following discussions with health sector officials.
The Deputy Minister recalled that the University of Visual and Performing Arts in Colombo also had to be temporarily closed earlier due to the risk of dengue spreading among students. He stated on the 4th of last month that arrangements have been made to reopen that university on the 13th, after considering the prevailing situation there.
However, the Minister also mentioned that no such cluster breeding of mosquitoes or spread of dengue fever has been reported from other higher education institutions on the island. Accordingly, he further stated that there has been no serious impact or necessity to close other universities to date.
