The country's Supreme Court has issued a controversial ruling against President Donald Trump's decision to abolish birthright citizenship for everyone born in the United States. This court ruling is a major obstacle to the American president's efforts to transform immigration policy.
After coming to power on January 20, 2025, Donald Trump had signed an executive order prohibiting children born in the United States to parents with temporary legal status or without proper documentation from automatically receiving citizenship. In this case before the Supreme Court challenging the government's decision, the judges announced the new ruling with a 6-3 majority. Lawyers representing the Trump administration had argued that the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which grants citizenship to persons born in and subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, applies only to infants of parents who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Announcing this ruling, Supreme Court judges pointed out that approximately 255,000 babies are born in the United States each year without citizenship. Furthermore, the judges revealed that, according to the current situation, the country's undocumented population is expected to increase by another 2.7 million by the year 2045.
