The Court of Appeal scheduled for hearing on the 30th the writ petition filed seeking an interim order to prevent the arrest of Mr. Tiran Alles, the Managing Director of Ceylon News Papers Company and former Minister, based on a cheque transaction between two private companies. This petition was considered before the Court of Appeal bench comprising Messrs. Mahendra and Pradeep Hettiarachchi.
According to a complaint received regarding a cheque transaction between Ceylon News Papers (Private) Limited and 'Kesara Lanka' (Private) Limited, the petition states that there is a possibility of the former minister being arrested at any moment. Through this petition, filed by Attorney-at-Law Sanath Wijewardena, the Inspector General of Police, the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, and Kesara Lanka Company, among others, have been named as respondents.
It has been informed to the court that the police have already questioned several employees of the petitioner company regarding this crisis. In such a context, since the arrest of the company's managing director is illegal, the petitioner company requests the issuance of a writ order and an interim order to prevent it. Here, President's Counsel Romesh de Silva appeared for the petitioners, while President's Counsel Virath Corea made submissions on behalf of the respondent party.
