Mr. Pasan Amarasekara, President of the Sri Lanka Judicial Officers' Association, has resigned from his post, citing certain actions launched against the government's attention to extend the retirement age of Supreme Court judges. It is reported that he made this decision due to strong pressure exerted by some individuals to convene an emergency general meeting in a manner contrary to the association's constitution.
According to the constitutional regulations of the association, an emergency general meeting of this nature requires a written request signed by not less than one-third of the total membership, i.e., at least 89 members, to be submitted to the President. Although the relevant emergency meeting was planned to be held today (11), by yesterday evening, fewer than 50 members had signed expressing their agreement.
In the face of the chaotic situation that arose due to the attempt to violate the constitution in this manner, the President resigned from his post, and his firm stance has been appreciated and approved by a significant majority of the members of the Judicial Officers' Association. This attempt to take similar action within the Judges' Association is currently facing strong criticism, especially given that a group from the Bar Association of Sri Lanka also convened a similar arbitrary meeting on the 4th of last month, which completely failed.
