A young woman's dead body was discovered by the police in a rented house in the Gorakana, Galkanuwa Road area, which falls under the Panadura North Police Division. The body, suspected to have been murdered by having her throat slit with a knife, was found when residents and the police broke down the door to investigate due to a strong foul odor emanating from the house.
The unfortunate victim has been identified as 26-year-old Naduni Sashri Cooray Mannamarakkalage, who was studying for a law degree at a private university. Preliminary police investigations revealed that she had previously resided in the Moratuwa area, was married to a person holding a high-ranking position in a private institution, and had later divorced him. In addition to her law studies, she was also contributing to court proceedings under a lawyer as part of her practical training.
The deceased young woman had been living alone in the rented house, and her family members had been unable to obtain any information about her for about two days. It is reported that five small dogs, which she was very fond of keeping as pets, were also found in the room where she died. At the time the body was discovered, two knives suspected to have been used for the murder were found near the body and taken into police custody.
No definitive conclusion has yet been reached as to whether this mysterious death was a suicide or occurred due to some other criminal intervention. Panadura North Police have launched extensive investigations to uncover the true facts regarding the incident. Panadura Divisional Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers and fingerprint officers have already conducted examinations at the scene, and a Panadura Magistrate's inquiry is also scheduled to be held in the future.
These investigations are being carried out under the direct instructions of Panadura Senior Superintendent of Police Nishan Silva and Assistant Superintendent of Police Kamal Jayaneththi, and are led by Panadura North Police Station OIC Chief Inspector Tissa Sarathchandra.
