The Sri Lanka Air Force makes a special request to the public to refrain from flying kites in areas around airports and flight paths. This warning has been issued after a Y-12 type training aircraft, which took off from Ratmalana Airport on July 15, had to make an emergency landing due to getting entangled in kite strings.
During technical inspections conducted after the safe landing of the aircraft, it was revealed that a large number of kite strings were entangled in its left wheel, left engine area, and several other important parts. The Air Force points out that such activities pose a serious threat to the safety of aircraft, stating that kite strings or other types of debris floating in the air can enter aircraft engines and control systems. This can cause serious damage to aircraft and lead to a loss of control, endangering the lives of both the aircraft crew and passengers.
Considering the current situation, it has been identified that the trend of flying kites has increased in the areas around Katunayake, Ratmalana, Mattala, Hingurakgoda, China Bay, Anuradhapura, Palaly, Katukurunda, Koggala, Vavuniya, and Weerawila airports. Therefore, to ensure overall flight safety, the Air Force requests the entire public, including residents living near airports and flight paths, to completely refrain from flying kites within these restricted zones.
