Two women who were performing various 'bali pooja' (ritualistic offerings) on tombstones in a cemetery located in the Bakamuna area of Polonnaruwa have been arrested by the Bakamuna Police. These women conducted this mysterious ritual by placing clay figures resembling human forms on the tombstones and lighting lamps. The police carried out this raid based on information provided by suspicious residents.
Upon receiving the information, police officers immediately responded, arriving at the scene and conducting an inspection. It was revealed that these women had severely damaged the tombstones. Furthermore, police investigations uncovered that they had also dug up several graves there. Various tools used for the 'bali pooja' have also been taken into police custody.
Of the suspects arrested, one is a 49-year-old woman residing in the Hingurakgoda area of Polonnaruwa, while the other suspect is a 38-year-old woman residing in the Sarubima area of Bakamuna. These two suspects are expected to be produced before the court under the offense of causing damage to a cemetery and tombstones, as per the Private and Public Cemeteries Ordinance.
Meanwhile, residents allege that these two women have previously engaged in similar rituals and mysterious activities on several occasions. The public further states that they are deeply distressed by these constant frightening acts centered around the cemetery, and that a great fear and suspicion have now arisen, making it difficult to live peacefully in the village.
