Ms. Vishmi, a lawyer, is the youngest organizer of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB). She constantly invites the youth to join politics representing the party.
She says this:"I am currently the youngest organizer and the youngest woman appointed in the Maharagama electorate. Therefore, we need to talk about young men and women entering politics.
Today, young men and women expect a new kind of politics, beyond traditional politics. Political leaders who listen to their ideas and implement them. At this moment, I respectfully recall that our party leader, Hon. Sajith Premadasa, always gives space to and listens to the ideas of young men and women. Currently, young men and women expect a political culture that goes beyond family rule and corruption. Then there are two most important groups that can create that culture. One is the youth themselves. The other is women.
So, I once again request every young man and woman, everyone in this village and electorate, to join us. We need you. Let's work together in this party and create a leader for us. The next creators are women. More than fifty percent of Sri Lanka's population are women. Currently, there is a female Prime Minister in Sri Lanka. However, when it comes to entering politics, very few women actually enter politics.
The reason women in Sri Lanka do not enter politics is due to the insults they receive, and the situation today where they cannot even use public transport. I regret to say that when this current government came into power, they said, 'Women, we are united.' But not a single one of those women came forward to address the problems faced by these women. They speak when they have a problem inside parliament. But there is no one to speak for us.
So, I say a big reason why women do not enter politics is that the insults they receive through social media are very despicable and ugly. I say to women, only you can stand up for your rights. I invite women to join us."
