It was recently revealed to the media by his family members and Member of Parliament Udaya Gammanpila that Mr. Tuan Suresh Salley, former Director of the State Intelligence Service and retired Major General, has commenced a hunger strike while in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Mr. Suresh Salley's wife, brother, and eldest son held a press conference stating that he is currently completely refusing to take food and medicine. Mr. Salley, who was arrested on February 25, 2026, is currently being interrogated, initially under a 72-hour detention order, and subsequently under a 90-day detention order issued by the President as the Minister of Defence.
Several parties point out that the main reason for this hunger strike is that he has been subjected to torture and sexual harassment while in detention. However, several clear inconsistencies are observed in the statements given regarding these allegations. When he was examined by the Magistrate in early March, a few days after his arrest, Mr. Suresh Salley stated that he had no problems or torture and that only a normal body examination was conducted. But in early May, he told the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) that his clothes were removed and his anus was examined. Subsequently, he stated to the psychiatrist that he was examined with his clothes lowered and that he was ashamed to elaborate further on the matter.
Investigations into the nature of these examinations have confirmed that the relevant body searches were conducted not by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department but by an independent team from the Police Special Task Force (STF). Following the incident during the Gotabaya Rajapaksa government where the criminal known as 'Haraka Kata' attempted to escape from the Criminal Investigation Department, it has become a standard security procedure to conduct daily and random searches by deploying the Special Task Force to check if detainees are concealing drugs or other illegal substances on their bodies (known as 'bunkering').
Despite claims that Mr. Suresh Salley is refusing food and medicine, the Police Media Spokesperson has confirmed that he has been referred for a special medical examination and that the reports are not yet available. Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department states that his arrest is not based solely on statements made by Asad Maulana on 'Channel Four'. Serious allegations such as the testimony given by the informant 'Pettha' that he communicated near the Katuwapitiya church, giving instructions to the informant 'Rumi', pressuring Deputy Inspectors General to alter Sara Jesmin's DNA reports, and making phone calls to Asad Maulana to rescue the person who brought the bomb to the Taj Samudra Hotel, have led to this arrest.
It is observed that Mr. Suresh Salley's behavior, which initially involved full cooperation with the investigations, has suddenly changed following the recent imposition of foreign travel bans on former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Major General Udulagama, and Colonel Mohamed Ansar. There is suspicion that through dramatic actions such as his lawyers sending letters to the Criminal Investigation Department and the Inspector General of Police requesting the preparation of his client's last will, a systematic attempt is being made to sabotage the ongoing and successful investigations into the Easter attack. While no torture of any suspect in police custody can be condoned, attempting to suppress the process of delivering justice to the victims of a terrorist attack that claimed hundreds of lives for such political motives is a serious situation.
