A father of three, who was hospitalized with severe injuries after being hit on the nose by a jackfruit that fell from a tree due to strong winds, has unfortunately passed away. This resident of Kegalle, who was receiving inpatient treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of Kandy National Hospital, died last Tuesday afternoon.

The person who faced this unfortunate fate is fifty-six-year-old Galpotta Gamage Rathnayake, a resident of Wathuradikhena, Kegalle. He is the father of two sons, including one of school-going age, and one daughter. It is also mentioned that his wife has been working abroad for about the past two and a half years.

According to police investigations, the deceased was a frequent visitor to the home of a friend residing in Alapalawala Wadupola village, about two kilometers from his own house. On the morning of the 25th, he went to that house as usual, where two other neighboring friends had also arrived. After cleaning the friend's chicken coop, all of them went to a stream located below it with the intention of washing themselves.

Meanwhile, with rainy weather conditions, a strong wind suddenly blew. At that moment, the owner of the chicken coop ran towards his coop, while the two neighbors and Mr. Rathnayake ran towards the friend's house. As he was walking towards the house alone, a jackfruit that fell from a tree about a hundred feet tall first hit a rock and then struck his nose. He lost his balance from the impact and fell, hitting the back of his head on a rock, which caused these severe injuries.

Subsequently, he was admitted to Kegalle General Hospital by a three-wheeler, and due to the severity of his condition, he was transferred to Kandy National Hospital on the same day. He passed away while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit there. The inquest into his death was conducted on the 2nd at Kandy National Hospital. Further investigations into the incident are being led by Sub-Inspector Mayurawansa of the Diverse Complaints Division, under the instructions of Chief Police Inspector P.R. Manawadu, OIC of Kegalle Headquarters Police.
