Major General Suresh Salley, former head of the State Intelligence Service, who was arrested in connection with the Easter Sunday terrorist attack and detained by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital tonight (07) due to an urgent health condition (constipation). He had been under CID custody since February 25 under detention orders.
Alleging that he was subjected to inhumane torture within the Criminal Investigation Department, he had commenced a severe hunger strike since last Friday night, refusing food and medicine in his cell. He has stated that he is engaging in this strike expecting death, and feeling that death is imminent, he has requested that arrangements be made for him to donate his eyes, and has informed his lawyers today to immediately bring the necessary documents for writing his last will.
Considering this situation, Major General Suresh Salley's lawyers have submitted a written request to Mr. Shani Abeysekera, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department. Through the letter, they have requested immediate access to meet their client to prepare his last will, and that an independent medical team examine his health condition and immediately transfer him to a hospital with suitable medical facilities.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Manori Salley, Major General Suresh Salley's wife, has also submitted a written complaint to the Inspector General of Police, requesting an immediate independent criminal investigation into the alleged cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of her husband, as well as the denial of medical treatment. She has alleged that her husband is not provided with adequate food, and even access to toilet facilities is blocked after 10 PM. She further pointed out to the IGP in her complaint that due to these inhumane acts, he is suffering from severe constipation and several other physical complications, which has even been confirmed by the Judicial Medical Officer's report.
In response to this illness, a group led by Dilith Jayaweera of the Sarvajana Balaya party has conducted Bodhi Poojas, while the Derana media network is broadcasting special news reports, implying Salley's innocence by airing audio clips of his wife, son, brother, and others.
If an injustice is being done to Salley, his lawyers had the opportunity to go to court for this matter, but instead, only conducting a media campaign creates a perplexing situation.
