Sarah Wyn-Williams, a former Global Public Policy Director at Facebook (now Meta), has filed a lawsuit against Meta's attempts to prevent the promotion of her memoir. The book, titled 'Careless People', written by her, who worked at the company from 2011 to 2017, was published in March 2025.
She has filed a 57-page complaint with the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, stating that the company is acting with the aim of silencing her.In her complaint, she points out that the injunction preventing the publication of the work is illegal and a blatant violation of the right to freedom of expression. She also accuses the company of subjecting her to intense scrutiny and acting in a threatening manner. Wyn-Williams' book contains serious allegations regarding internal cultural issues, sexual harassment, and gender-based discrimination within Meta. However, the company states that the book contains outdated and false accusations.
Meta has issued a statement regarding this legal action, claiming that she is abusing the legal process to sell her books. The company argues that she has breached an agreement signed in 2017, when she received a significant financial settlement upon her departure. However, Wyn-Williams responds by stating that she was forced to sign the agreement due to severe financial pressures resulting from losing her job, leaving her with no other option.
The complaint further states that she attended the 'Hay' literary festival in Wales in late May, and although she made no statements about the company there, based on legal advice, Meta representatives tracked her movements and took photographs. Following this series of events, sales of 'Careless People' have increased by approximately 304.5%, with over 150,000 copies now sold across the UK. Her lawyers and UK publishers point out that this is a covert attempt by one of the world's most powerful companies to silence an individual who is exposing its wrongdoing.
