Today, the serious suspicion that an invisible hand capable of changing the scales of justice overnight is operating behind the Criminal Investigation Department is openly present before the entire society.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama yesterday (02) engaged in intense questioning regarding the sudden alteration of serious written evidence presented to the court by the secret police, and ordered an immediate detailed report on the matter. This controversial incident revolves around Tamara Kumari Abeyratne, a lawyer from Kadawatha who is currently remanded for allegedly aiding and abetting the shooting and killing of underworld leader Sanjeewa of Ganemulla within the premises of the Colombo Magistrate's Court, and other suspects Mahesh Obeysekara and Lakshitha Sri Dulaj.
This lawyer, who was detained and questioned for one hundred and eighty-two days under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, had previously been reported to the court for having direct connections with large-scale drug traffickers and underworld members such as Kehelbaddara Padme. The secret police had previously confirmed on three occasions through 'B' reports that she maintained eight bank accounts using fake identity cards and had circulated over twenty-four crore rupees in suspicious funds within a short period of two years. Furthermore, the Colombo Crimes Division had also stated that six clear pieces of evidence had been uncovered, indicating that she had provided the robes necessary for the killers to disguise themselves as lawyers, fake lawyer identity cards with her signature, and even books needed to conceal the firearm on February 19, 2025.
However, to the astonishment of the entire judicial system, the secret police suddenly declared before the court that they would no longer proceed against these suspects under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. "How did those serious pieces of evidence, presented to the court on three occasions, change overnight? Have the fake identity cards and the crores of rupees in the accounts now become a lie?" the Chief Magistrate openly questioned the secret police, reminding them that before the law stand not merely suspects but human beings. The Magistrate pointed out that decisions cannot be made solely on the verbal promises given by the secret police that further investigations would only be conducted under the Proceeds of Crime Act, and he immediately took steps to call for a summary of evidence report in accordance with Section 123 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
As the three suspects return to their remand prison cells until the 5th, the entire society questions, piercing through the blindfold of the goddess of justice, whose will is behind the alteration of evidence.
