Former minister's mayor son harassed a female official

The Ampara Divisional Child and Women Abuse Prevention Unit has launched a comprehensive investigation into an incident where a former mayor, who is the son of a powerful former minister in the Ampara district, repeatedly sexually abused a management services officer. A senior police officer stated that several police teams are currently conducting investigations to arrest the suspect former mayor.

According to police sources, these investigations were initiated based on a complaint made by the victimized public official the day before yesterday.

This woman, who currently serves as a management services officer in another local council, had worked in the same municipal council where the suspect held the mayoral position in 2021. She stated in her complaint to the police that the suspect former mayor had promised to marry her. Her statement further mentions that on one occasion during that period, the mayor first raped her inside his official room.

On that occasion, the former mayor took her nude photographs and later sent them to her mobile phone. The suspect threatened to release these photos on the internet if she was unwilling to continue living with him as husband and wife. The victimized officer further revealed to the police that, due to these threats and against her will, the former mayor repeatedly sexually abused her until this year.

She became severely helpless due to the suspect completely breaking his promise to marry her. For this reason, a few days ago, she went to the home of the suspect former mayor's father, a powerful former minister, to meet him. The police state that although she informed the former minister about how his son had abused her under the guise of a marriage promise and the threats made by showing nude photographs, he disregarded all those accusations.
