
The National Dengue Control Unit announces that the total number of dengue deaths reported in the country during the elapsed period of the year has increased to 31. During this period, 124 health officer divisions across the island have been identified as high-risk zones.
The unit further states that the total number of dengue patients reported so far is 51,049, and when considering the percentage of deaths among them, it stands at 0.06 percent.The Western Province leads in reported cases, with 51 percent of all patients reported from that province. The National Dengue Control Unit states that 17,208 new patients were identified in June alone. It has been revealed that a high number of patients are also reported from the Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Eastern provinces, in addition to the Western Province.
Due to the prevailing high-risk situation, the health sector points out that the dengue patient capacity in several hospitals, including the Colombo National Hospital, Kalubowila Hospital, and IDH Hospital, has already been exceeded. To control this epidemic, the National Dengue Control Unit has taken steps to actively implement mosquito control programs covering all areas of the island.
