The host West Indies players managed to inflict a crushing defeat on the Sri Lankan team in the first Test cricket match between the two countries, held at the North Sound Stadium in Antigua. The West Indies team secured a massive victory by an innings and 217 runs in this battle, which concluded on the fourth day of the match.
In this match, the Sri Lankan team, batting first, scored 308 runs all out. Chasing this target, the West Indies team decided to declare their first innings after accumulating a colossal score of 626 runs for 9 wickets. As a result, the West Indies team managed to gain a massive first-innings lead of 318 runs over the Sri Lankan side. Facing this severe run challenge, the Sri Lankan batsmen, who came out to bat in the second innings, found no opportunity to succeed against the West Indies bowlers, and their entire innings was restricted to just 101 runs.
The most prominent and exceptional event of the entire match was the magnificent 401-run partnership for the 6th wicket in the West Indies innings, launched jointly by Aamir Jangoo and captain Roston Chase. This entered the record books as the highest partnership for the 6th wicket in the history of Test cricket, shattering the old world record of 399 runs set by England's Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow against the South African team ten years ago.
Aamir Jangoo, playing only his second Test cricket match, managed to score 233 runs, staying at the crease for 342 balls and reaching a magnificent double century. Captain Roston Chase, who provided excellent support from the other end, came very close to a double century but unfortunately missed that valuable milestone, getting out for 194 runs.
During Sri Lanka's second innings, the Sri Lankan batsmen, helpless against the West Indies bowling attack, did not get an opportunity to stay at the crease for long. Dinesh Chandimal managed to be the highest scorer for the Sri Lankan team, fighting to some extent and scoring 43 runs. However, frontline strong batsman Pathum Nissanka completely failed in this match, being restricted to 2 runs in the first innings and 3 runs in the second innings.
Kemar Roach, who showed outstanding bowling performance for the West Indies team, managed to take 4 wickets in Sri Lanka's innings, conceding only 51 runs. Fast bowler Jayden Seales, who provided valuable support to him, contributed to subduing the Sri Lankan batsmen by taking 3 wickets for a mere 14 runs.
Bowling on the North Sound pitch, which was prepared to be very favorable for batsmen, was a severe challenge for the Sri Lankan bowlers. The situation was further exacerbated when the team's main fast bowler, Lahiru Kumara, suffered an injury during the match. Despite such difficult conditions, Milan Rathnayake, playing in his 6th Test match, managed to claim his first five-wicket haul in his Test cricket career by taking 5 wickets for 124 runs. Additionally, Sonal Dinusha engaged in a long bowling spell, delivering 56 overs and taking 2 wickets for 234 runs.
