Badulla High Court Judge Jeyaram Trotsky has announced the verdict in a case filed against former Member of Parliament Chaminda Wijesiri and two others, declaring them guilty. Accordingly, the former MP and Bandula Ratnayake, who served as his driver, have been found guilty on four charges, while Police Officer Rasika Karunathilaka, who was attached to the Ministerial Security Division, has been found guilty on three charges by the court.
This trial was conducted before the Badulla High Court based on charges of wrongful obstruction, voluntarily causing injuries by assault, issuing death threats to two police officers on duty, and injuring them. Following the announcement of the verdict, the judge postponed further proceedings of the case until July 28th. A special fact revealed in court was that the driver Bandula Ratnayake, who was a defendant in this case, has since passed away.
The background to this incident originated on or around February 10, 2019, near the roundabout in Bandarawela town. It was revealed during the trial that on that afternoon, former Member of Parliament Chaminda Wijesiri and a group were traveling in jeeps, and a heated argument erupted between the two parties when a police jeep drove past their vehicle.
The prosecution stated in court that the former MP and his group, angered by the police jeep overtaking their vehicle, immediately blocked the police vehicle's path. It was further revealed that the defendants did not stop there but assaulted and injured the officers inside the police jeep, issuing death threats to their lives.
