Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced that it destroyed eight American military infrastructure facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain in retaliation for American attacks. Iran states that during this joint missile and drone operation, conducted on June 28, 2026, Kuwait's Ali Al Salem Air Base and the headquarters of the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Port Salman, Bahrain, were successfully targeted.
According to Iranian state media (IRIB), this series of attacks was launched by Iranian naval and aerospace forces using ballistic missiles and drones between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM on June 28. The IRGC statement indicates that this "decisive response" was made against American attacks on five locations along the Iranian coast earlier that day, which violated a 14-point memorandum of understanding signed to de-escalate tensions in West Asia. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps further emphasizes that its heroic soldiers succeeded in destroying eight vital infrastructure facilities of the 'child-killing' American military in Kuwait and Bahrain. They also warn that any future American action will be met with severe retaliation, and that strict measures will be taken against ships violating agreements, as naval traffic in the Strait of Hormuz remains under their control.
This Iranian attack followed a series of strikes by the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on Iranian targets on June 26 and 27, carried out under the direction of U.S. President Donald Trump. The U.S. launched these attacks in response to Iranian drone attacks targeting commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian attacks had targeted the Panama-flagged 'M/T Kiku' vessel, which was transporting over two million barrels of crude oil, and the Singapore-flagged 'M/V Ever Lovely' vessel. In response, the U.S. targeted Iranian military observation systems, communication systems, air defense sites, drone storage facilities, and locations with mine-laying capabilities.
Following the Iranian attack, Kuwait and Bahrain immediately activated their defense systems. The Kuwaiti military stated that it intercepted and destroyed incoming enemy missiles and drones, and the sounds of explosions from these defense operations were clearly heard by residents. Meanwhile, Bahraini authorities also sounded warning sirens, urging their country's population to remain calm.
Iran's claim that eight infrastructure facilities were completely destroyed has not yet been independently verified, and the U.S. Central Command typically states that such claims are exaggerated or false. However, open-source intelligence and satellite imagery analysis, including by BBC Verify, have confirmed significant damage to fuel depots and aircraft hangars at Kuwait's Ali Al Salem Air Base, Camp Arifjan, and the U.S. Fifth Fleet premises in Bahrain during the early stages of this conflict (May and June). This broader Iran-U.S.-Israel conflict, which began in late February 2026, has now severely jeopardized regional stability in the Middle East, international oil prices, and naval traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
