A 16-year-old schoolboy has died and his friend has sustained serious injuries in a severe motorcycle accident that occurred in the Makuluduwa area of Piliyandala. Piliyandala Police stated that the fast-moving motorcycle collided with a telephone pole by the roadside during the accident, which took place on the morning of the 27th.
The student who died in this unfortunate incident was Isuru Daham Neth Hettiarachchi, a resident of the Niwanthidiya area in Piliyandala. He was studying in the 11th grade at Maharagama Central College. At the time of the accident, a friend from his own class, residing in a nearby house, was riding pillion on the motorcycle.
According to police investigations, the deceased student had purchased this motorcycle for Rs. 40,000 about two months ago due to persistent requests made to his father, who is abroad. On the day of the accident, the student's mother had left for work, and only his younger sister was at home. At that time, the student took the motorcycle from home and rode from Makuluduwa towards Arawwala. The accident occurred when he lost control of the speed while attempting to overtake a three-wheeler traveling in the same direction ahead of him. The manner in which the accident occurred was also recorded on a CCTV camera installed at a nearby shop.
Police have revealed that the crashed motorcycle was assembled from various parts, and an air filter from another motorcycle had been installed to increase its speed. Furthermore, the deceased student who caused the accident did not possess a driver's license, and the seriously injured pillion rider was not wearing a safety helmet at the time. Due to the severe impact, several parts of the motorcycle, including the front wheel, were broken and detached.
After the accident, the seriously injured pillion rider was admitted to Kalubowila Teaching Hospital via the 1990 Suwasariya ambulance service, while hospital sources state that the student who rode the motorcycle was already deceased upon admission to Piliyandala District Hospital. The post-mortem examination of the deceased schoolboy is scheduled to be conducted by Piliyandala Kesbewa Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, Mr. Alwis Wijesinghe. Piliyandala Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
