The two helpless individuals, who were sent from an estate to secure ten crore bail for Kapila, have been remanded.

It is being proven again and again how large the loopholes in the law of this country are in the face of money and power. An organized racket of providing fake sureties for VIPs released on bail amounting to crores is being exposed before the court.

This dark reality has once again come to the forefront with the arrest of two fake individuals who came to provide bail for former CEO Kapila Chandrasena, who was remanded on charges of accepting bribes when SriLankan Airlines purchased ten Airbus aircraft in 2013. For the two massive personal bails of ten crore rupees imposed on him by the court, two helpless individuals, Mohamed Rizwan and Mohamed Irshan, residents of Sanchi Arachchiwatta, Aluthkade, who had no stable income or employment, had come forward.

These individuals, who did not know who Kapila Chandrasena was even personally, had come before the court to take on this responsibility worth crores of rupees, merely for a fee of fifteen thousand rupees, under the direction of 'Deva' and 'Tissa'.

While the two helpless individuals with no stable income, who came forward to be sureties for ten crore rupees for a fee of fifteen thousand rupees, remain in remand until the 13th, the masterminds who plundered public funds amounting to billions are subtly slipping through the loopholes in the law. The manner in which these individuals obtained the Grama Niladhari certificates presented to the court is currently under serious suspicion, and Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva has ordered the police to submit a comprehensive report on the matter. By merely imprisoning these two helpless individuals for an offense punishable under the provisions of the Bail Act No. 30 of 1997 and washing hands of the matter, there is a serious risk that the real planners of this scheme will escape justice.

The consequences of the erosion of public trust in local law and investigative institutions through such incidents are so severe that a situation has arisen where direct foreign intervention is being sought for controversial events.

Now, a serious question mark remains before us. Will the Keselwatta Police properly reveal who the invisible hands were that directed these innocent individuals to stand bail for Kapila Chandrasena?
