Mr. Premanath Dolawatta of the Sarvajana Balaya Party stated the following at a press conference.
"We saw that at a moment when all opposition groups needed to unite, when journalists asked a question about Mr. Dilith Jayaweera, Mr. Sagara Kariyawasam said, "Don't joke." Is that how it should be done? Or how do you see it?
That's Mr. Sagara Kariyawasam's situation. He always breaks unity whenever there's an opportunity for it.
I remember he was the first to criticize Mr. Udaya Gammanpila from within our government.
We, from within the government, have advised Mr. Sagara Kariyawasam not to create divisions.
I remember he was the one who said that if there's a big crisis or struggle and they come to our houses, we will also fight back. Nobody knows his houses. Our houses have been there for generations. Everyone knows our houses.
That's why our houses were attacked. Otherwise, we wouldn't have had a chance to fight back. Luckily, our houses weren't burned. They were only attacked, and we were saved. So, since all my relatives, my mother, and father are in those houses, anyone can come.
So, it's wrong for people with immature political knowledge like Mr. Sagara Kariyawasam to make such boastful and immature statements at a time when unity should be fostered, and we, as the opposition, should unite. All the people in this country are saying that the opposition should unite. They say it all the time, even during cooperative elections.
The other point is, it must be clearly stated; if Mr. Anura Kumara Dissanayake became the president of this country with 3% and three seats, then Mr. Namal Rajapaksa can also become the president of this country. Mr. Dilith Jayaweera can also become the president of this country. Mr. Sajith Premadasa can also become the president. Nobody can say that they cannot become president.
So, people work with the hopes of their lives. When working with that hope, it is possible for an ordinary person to insult, disparage, and belittle people in that manner.
However, the general secretary of a party that has ruled this country, produced presidents, formed governments, and is poised to produce presidents in the future, cannot make such immature and demeaning statements about people.
If he says such things, it is not suitable for his gentlemanly character. Also, he should be a very open-minded person. He should listen to what everyone says. He should have the ability to unite everyone.
Mr. Dilith Jayaweera is a current Member of Parliament. So, it's not good to slander the leaders of those parties and insult people in that manner.
So, that's his nature. We have to sympathize with him. But we have a big problem.
As a member of the leadership council representing the opposition, I believe our intention should be to bring all these people to one table."
