It is reported that Olympic gold medalist and super cyclist Katie Archibald has decided to retire from sports and join the nursing profession. Representing the Rio and Tokyo Olympics, where she won gold medals, she has announced her immediate retirement from her professional sports career.
The 32-year-old athlete, who has won numerous World, European, and Commonwealth championships over the years, will also not participate in the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games. She states that she has long had a strong desire to step away from cycling and connect with the real world, and that the fear of leaving the world she loved so much delayed this decision. Archibald, who has a strong passion for the nursing profession, has already begun the necessary training. She mentions that her goal is to dedicate herself to humanitarian service instead of chasing professional achievements.
During her 13-year sports career, she managed to win a remarkable 51 medals at World, European, and Olympic levels. Entering the sports field through grass-track cycling competitions, she was selected for the Great Britain academy squad in a very short time. She began her winning journey with a European team competition in 2013, and since then, she has become known as one of the top performers in track cycling.
In addition to her victories, she also faced numerous personal challenges, particularly the sudden passing of her partner Rab Wardell in 2022, which caused her significant mental distress.
