Kollupitiya Police have reported facts to the Fort Magistrate's Court regarding the demise of Mr. Kapila Chandrasena, former CEO of SriLankan Airlines, and a broad investigation has been launched, considering this a suspicious death. His body was found this morning (08) in a second-floor room of a house belonging to veteran cricketer Mr. Aravinda de Silva, located at No. 37/38, Pedris Road, Kollupitiya, Colombo.

The deceased Mr. Kapila Chandrasena is the husband of Aravinda de Silva's wife's younger sister, and he had arrived at the said house yesterday (07) evening with the intention of spending the night there.

Mr. Chandrasena, who had been remanded for fifty-four days on bribery charges in the recent past, was out on bail under strict conditions. However, with the Bribery Commission revealing that the two individuals who came forward to provide bail for him were hired for fifteen thousand rupees, he was scheduled to be re-arrested today for breaching the court's trust. A group of his close relatives had also participated in a consultation session yesterday evening with President's Counsel Rienzie Arsecularatne to discuss the future legal steps to be taken in this regard, where it was decided to present him to the court through a motion.

Around 7:30 AM today, a lawyer from the President's Counsel's team arrived at the house where Mr. Chandrasena was staying, to inform him about the court proceedings scheduled for today. As the door to his room was locked, it was opened using a spare key with the assistance of a woman in the house, where he was found deceased. At the time the body was discovered, he was in a posture of sitting on the floor near a chair, with his head resting on a cushion on the chair, and the lower part of his body touching the floor.

Furthermore, a broken piece of cloth was found around the deceased's neck, and the other part of it was tied to the bathroom door, as revealed by preliminary police investigations. Fort Magistrate Mr. Pasan Amarasekara, who arrived at the scene, conducted the magisterial inquiry and ordered a post-mortem examination to be conducted by a panel of five specialist doctors appointed by the Director of the Colombo National Hospital to ascertain the exact cause of death.

It is expected that the results of this investigation will reveal facts about the suspicious manner in which the death occurred.

Kollupitiya Police are conducting a broad investigation under the direct supervision of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Western Province, Mr. Sajeeva Medawatta, and Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Colombo Division, Mr. Nishantha Zoysa, to determine whether this death was a suicide by hanging or if there was any criminal background involved. The police have also requested the court to release the body, currently kept at the mortuary of the Colombo National Hospital, to the sister of his wife, Mrs. Priyangi Anushka Wijenaike, after the completion of the post-mortem examination. The reason for this is that the deceased Mr. Kapila Chandrasena's wife is currently abroad.
