The defendant's stand in a large-scale aircraft deal that shook even the international community ended in a mysterious death that no one expected.
The lifeless body of Mr. Kapila Chandrasena, former CEO of SriLankan Airlines, was found in the early hours of May 8th in a well-known house in Kollupitiya. His death, which occurred in this house said to belong to the family of former cricketer Mr. Aravinda de Silva, is still considered a highly suspicious incident by the police. This tragic fate befell him just a few days after he was granted bail by the court.
The Airbus deal, which was accused of involving a massive bribe of two million US dollars, was an incident that caused great controversy in the recent history of this country. On May 5th, Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama ordered his release on bail under strict conditions, after he had been remanded for over fifty days since March 12th. The court made this decision despite strong opposition from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, taking into account the special submissions and health conditions presented by the legal team led by President's Counsel Rienzie Arsecularatne. The conditions included a cash bail of five hundred thousand rupees, three personal bails of ten million rupees each, surrendering his passport to the court, and a travel ban abroad.
The facts he revealed about the Airbus deal while he was remanded this time constituted a serious accusation against a former president. These revelations led to public distrust of Mahinda Rajapaksa, who had not been implicated in any wrongdoing despite various strategies until now. The Bribery Commission continuously objected in court to the release of someone who made such a rare disclosure, but the Magistrate's decision was different.
However, he only had a very short period of two days to breathe freely, having escaped the clutches of the law. On May 7th, the entire incident took a dramatic turn when the Bribery Commission revealed information related to this case in court. It was disclosed that two of the three individuals who signed as sureties for Mr. Chandrasena were hired for fifteen thousand rupees. Due to the breach of the court's trust and violation of bail conditions, the Magistrate issued another warrant for his immediate re-arrest on the same day.
What happened during his final hours, facing the risk of returning behind bars, the potential damage to political reputations, and the intense public pressure, remains a mystery. The police are conducting a broad investigation into this matter until the post-mortem reports are received.
Despite all the power, wealth, and fame, the flames ignited before the temple of justice were extinguished, leaving many questions unanswered and one life prematurely lost.
