Colombo Additional Magistrate Oshada Migara Maharachchi ordered that the two complaints filed against the well-known model Piyumi Hansamali and Viranjith Thabugala, who are accused of evading income tax payments amounting to Rs. 4190 lakhs, be set aside until the Attorney General's advice is received.
The Commissioner of Inland Revenue had filed these cases before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court, presenting facts that the two relevant defendants had evaded tax payments due to the government. The complaint alleged that the defendant Piyumi Hansamali had evaded a sum of Rs. 2250 lakhs and Viranjith Thabugala had evaded a sum of Rs. 1940 lakhs, thereby evading a large amount of tax money due to the government.
When these cases were called yesterday (30th), Attorney Dinesh Perera, appearing on behalf of the Commissioner of Inland Revenue, informed the court that the investigations related to the incidents have now been fully completed. The lawyer further clarified that the relevant extracts from those investigations have been forwarded to the Attorney General for further legal action, but the Attorney General's advice regarding this has not yet been received.
The Additional Magistrate, having considered all the presented facts, ordered these complaints to be temporarily set aside until the Attorney General's advice is received, and it was decided that the future course of action in the case would be determined after those instructions are received.
