A complaint has been filed requesting the immediate arrest of Mr. Dilum Amunugama, the National Organizer of the Sarvajana Balaya Party, who made a statement discrediting the child victim of a child abuse incident in the Anuradhapura area in front of the general public. The organization 'End Child Abuse' has submitted this complaint to the National Child Protection Authority and the Child and Women's Bureau, and the politician's act of referring to the child victim as a prostitute has been severely criticized.
Commenting on this incident, Dr. Thush Wickramanayake, Executive Director of the 'End Child Abuse' organization, stated that Mr. Dilum Amunugama's statement directly impacts and severely wrongs the child victim of the crime. She emphasized that such an act is a serious criminal offense according to the provisions of Sri Lanka's existing Victims and Witnesses Protection Act, and therefore, the Child Protection Authority and the Police Bureau must act immediately to strictly enforce the law.
The doctor pointed out that it is the paramount duty of all sensitive human hearts in society to stand up for the aggrieved child, regardless of the status of the perpetrator. She accused that due to weaknesses in the current enforcement of the law, there appears to be special consideration given to the suspect in the incident, Atamasthanadhipathi Pallegama Hemarathana Thero. She further clarified that while she and her group constantly respect the historic Atamasthana, what is being questioned here is only the behavior of the individual named Hemarathana, who is misusing his power.
The Executive Director emphasized that her stance is in no way a problem related to religion or the Sangha Sasana, stating that the real crisis facing current society is the indifference shown by responsible state institutions in enforcing the law against a suspect. Therefore, she further urged the National Child Protection Authority and the police not to waste time on various detours but to take swift legal action regarding this incident.
