Eight people have died in a severe accident that occurred when a freight train and a passenger bus collided at a busy intersection in central Bangkok, Thailand. The tragedy took place on the afternoon of Saturday, May 16, 2026, at a railway crossing near Makkasan Airport Rail Link Station on the Asok-Din Daeng road.
Immediately after the accident, the bus caught fire and burned, and the fire rapidly spread to several other vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, parked nearby.Authorities confirm that all those who died in the incident were passengers traveling on the bus. Another 25 to 35 people sustained various injuries, and the condition of several of them is reported to be serious. The injured were promptly admitted to several nearby hospitals for treatment. Rescue operations were coordinated by the Erawan Medical Center, and by the time firefighters, police, and relief teams swiftly responded and brought the fire under control, the bus and several other vehicles had been completely destroyed.
According to eyewitnesses and security camera footage, this orange passenger bus became stuck on the railway tracks while crossing, either due to traffic signals or some obstruction. Meanwhile, a freight train carrying containers, approaching at a moderate speed, was unable to apply brakes sufficiently and collided directly with the bus. Reports indicate that a malfunction of the safety gates at the railway crossing or the inability of the relevant official to lower them in time was one of the causes of this accident. Video footage showing a large fire erupting instantly as the train collided with the bus is currently circulating widely on news channels and social media platforms.
Bangkok Police Chief Urumporn Kundejsumrit, Acting Governor of the State Railway of Thailand Anan Phonimdaeng, and the Deputy Minister of Transport, among others, have commented on the incident, and a comprehensive investigation has now been launched. A special investigation is being conducted into potential defects in the signal system and gates at the railway crossing, as well as the attentiveness of the drivers. This is the second largest train accident reported in Thailand, a country prone to road accidents, within the last six months, raising serious concerns about the safety of public transport and railway crossings in the country.
