Japanese media has reported the sudden death of a 22-year-old Sri Lankan youth who was in custody at the Tsuchiura Police Station in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. According to major media networks including Tokyo Reporter and TBS News, this unfortunate incident occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

The deceased youth was a resident of Toride City in Ibaraki Prefecture, and his full name has not yet been released to the media due to privacy concerns and ongoing investigations. He had been detained at the Tsuchiura Police Station for questioning in connection with an alleged incident.

According to police reports, around 3:45 PM that day, an officer on a routine patrol around the detention cell observed that the snoring sound of the youth, who had been sleeping, had suddenly stopped. Upon checking, it was found that the youth was unresponsive and had difficulty breathing. Officers immediately provided him with first aid and called an ambulance, which transported him to a nearby hospital. However, hospital authorities officially announced that he had passed away around 5:31 PM that day.

Preliminary investigations revealed no visible prominent injuries on the deceased youth's body, and authorities believe this was not a suicide. As the cause of death has not yet been definitively established, the police plan to conduct a judicial autopsy to investigate the matter. A representative from the Tsuchiura Police Station stated to the media that they took appropriate and proper measures during this sudden medical emergency.

A large number of foreign workers, including Sri Lankans, employed in sectors such as industry, agriculture, and construction, live in Ibaraki Prefecture and industrial zones around Toride City, which is close to Tokyo. Foreigners, including Sri Lankans, residing in Japan often face various challenges when dealing with law enforcement agencies due to linguistic problems, visa issues, and cultural differences.

Although no public accusations of wrongdoing or assault have been made regarding this death so far, such sudden deaths occurring while in police custody have sparked intense debate about the procedures in Japan's detention centers. Notably, the death of a Sri Lankan woman named Wishma Sandamali at a Japanese immigration center in 2021 has also resurfaced in public attention, leading to demands from various parties regarding the safety of foreign detainees, CCTV monitoring, delays in medical treatment due to lack of language facilities, and the need for independent investigations. However, the post-mortem examination report, which is expected to be released in the coming days, will further reveal the true details of this incident.
