The Mallakam Magistrate's Court has ordered the remand of a woman, who allegedly faced a firearm threat from Parliamentarian Ramanathan Arjunan over a land dispute in the Periyavilan area of Jaffna, until the 29th of next month. Based on special permission granted by the court, the woman's one-year-old child has also been allowed to stay with her while in remand.
A court case regarding the boundaries and ownership of the land that led to this dispute is currently ongoing. Despite this, the tense situation arose when the MP attempted to clear the said land on the 25th of last month. The MP claims the land belongs to him, while two women who arrived at the scene at that time engaged in a heated argument with the MP, claiming a portion of the land also belonged to them.
At this point, a young man, a relative of the women, also arrived at the scene, and his relatives accuse MP Arjunan of kicking the young man. Furthermore, it is reported that the MP, embroiled in the argument, publicly threatened the woman with death by brandishing a pistol he held. In addition, a lawyer named Kaushalya, who was also at the scene, argued with the women and video-recorded them.
Following the incident, the woman was arrested by the police based on a complaint made by the MP to the Ilavalai Police Station. She was subsequently remanded after being produced before the Mallakam Magistrate's Court. However, it is further reported that no legal action has been taken against the Parliamentarian so far regarding the public death threat to the woman and the assault on the young man.
