The Railway Department has taken steps to immediately suspend the services of four staff members who were on duty in the 'Sagarika' express train that derailed on the 24th.
Departmental sources confirm that those whose services have been suspended include the main driver, assistant driver, chief guard, and assistant guard of the said train.
The 'Sagarika' express office service train, which was running from Beliatta railway station to Maradana, suddenly derailed in the Wadduwa area on the morning of the 24th. At the time of the accident, the main engine and passenger compartments of the train had separated from each other, causing injuries to many passengers traveling in it.
Steps were taken to promptly hospitalize several passengers who were injured in the incident for treatment.
This disciplinary action has been taken following preliminary investigations into the cause of the train derailment and whether any negligence occurred on the part of the officers on duty at the time.
Railway authorities state that the services of the four officers have been suspended in this manner until further investigations into the incident are concluded.
