During a special operation conducted by the Western North Crimes Division, three suspects were arrested along with 20 vehicles, including illegally assembled luxury motor cars. It has now been revealed that these vehicles have been used for various organized criminal activities, and it has come to light that some police and tri-forces personnel have also assisted in the illegal assembly process of these vehicles.
This operation was launched under the full supervision of Mr. Chaminda Dharmaratne, Director of the Western Province North Crimes Division and Assistant Superintendent of Police, following a complaint received by him. The arrested suspects are residents of Kadawatha, Gampaha, and Ja-Ela, and based on information obtained from them, investigators were able to locate this stock of assembled vehicles hidden in Colombo, Kadawatha, Meegahawatta, and Monaragala areas.
The vehicles taken into police custody include 05 luxury motor cars, 03 jeeps, a van, a lorry, and several motorcycles. Investigations have confirmed that these traffickers changed the chassis numbers of the vehicles and sold them to various individuals, and then the same party that sold the vehicles would steal them back and sell them to other parties, maintaining a sophisticated racket.
During further questioning of the arrested suspects, information about nearly 40 more illegally assembled vehicles has been revealed. Several police teams are currently conducting raids to apprehend all these vehicles. The police urge the public to inform the Western North Crimes Division at 0112947780 if their vehicle has been stolen or is missing.
A comprehensive investigation into organized crimes, including murders, robberies, extortions, and assaults committed using these illegal vehicles, is still ongoing, and other suspects involved are expected to be arrested in the future. Arrangements have been made to present the three suspects currently in custody before the courts in the relevant jurisdictions.
