Mr. Sugishwara Bandara, former secretary to former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, lodged a complaint today at the Talangama Police Station. This was regarding an attack on a protest held by him and others in front of a house.
He states that this protest was organized against Mr. Harshana Suriyapperuma by going to his house, and during the protest, a mob connected to the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) brutally attacked them by throwing cow dung, feces, and eggs.Mr. Sugishwara Bandara alleges that this attack was carried out by a group carrying weapons, stones, firecrackers, and iron rods, even while senior officers of the Talangama Police were watching. He emphasized that at one point, the attackers took the law into their own hands, pushing and scolding police officers, and behaved like terrorists.
He states that none of those who came to attack were residents of Pelawatta Dehisinghe Mawatha, and all of them came from outside areas. He also said that one attacker had a firearm and threatened the protesters, saying, "This is a JVP government now, so leave this place without getting killed." He further stated that the number of the motorcycle involved has been identified as WP BDJ 1041, and he is requesting Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya and Mr. Ravi Seneviratne to intervene immediately and arrest the armed individuals who attacked the unarmed protesters.
He further stated that he possesses audio and video recordings containing a confession by an attacker, admitting that they attacked because they could not tolerate the protest near Mr. Harshana Suriyapperuma's house.
He states that among this group were an employee of the Electricity Board who arrived during working hours, as well as a full-time member receiving a salary from the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna. He also says that Susan Indika, a member of the Civil Security Committee related to the Talangama Police, and Nilatha, a vice-chairman of the Community Police Unit, were also part of this mob. Nilatha reportedly laid hands on a senior police officer's uniform, told him to leave, and attempted to assault Mr. Sugishwara Bandara. He questions whether there is an attempt to suppress the opposition by including thugs in civil security committees.
