Psychiatrist Vidya Wijebandara warns that due to the severe hot weather prevailing across the island these days, there is a high risk of conditions such as dehydration, depression, and mental distress developing among the public. She particularly points out that this extreme heat can lead to restlessness, stress, and severe mental pressure among people.
The doctor revealed these facts yesterday (01) while participating in a special press conference held at the Health Promotion Bureau in Colombo. The doctor states that exposure to excessive heat causes the body to dehydrate, leading to certain changes in the body's chemical composition. These chemical changes directly affect the functioning of chemicals and hormones, especially in the brain, making it a strong reason for a person's mental state to decline. Additionally, she explained that the extreme heat at night severely disrupts people's normal sleep, and lack of proper sleep further contributes to the development of mental stress and depression.
The doctor advises that high-risk groups such as individuals suffering from chronic diseases, young children, pregnant women, and the elderly should exercise greater caution in the face of these weather conditions. She also emphasized that alcohol and drug use these days is entirely detrimental and can severely impair mental health. Engaging in light exercises, meditation, listening to music, and participating in nature-related activities will be very beneficial for maintaining a clear mind during this challenging period.
