US President Donald Trump has stated that the date for ending the ongoing war with Iran will be decided through mutual agreement after discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Speaking by phone with The Times of Israel newspaper, he said that all factors would be considered at the appropriate time before a decision is made on the matter.
Meanwhile, speaking to Fox News, the President stated that he was not at all happy with the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran's new Supreme Leader. However, he further emphasized that Iran's military capabilities have been significantly weakened due to American military attacks, and that ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz should not fear this, even amidst the tense situation in the Middle East. This week-old war waged by the United States and Israel against Iran has already had a severe impact on the global economy. For the first time in about four years, the price of a barrel of crude oil worldwide has exceeded the $100 mark, briefly rising to $110. In light of this situation, the Democratic Party has severely criticized the Trump administration, stating that Americans are facing a high cost of living. Representative Tom Suozzi and Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin point out that the increase in people's daily expenses is a direct result of this war. According to AAA data, fuel prices in the US have risen by 47 cents per gallon within a week, with the national average now at $3.45. Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer has called on the government to release oil from strategic reserves to control this price increase.
Responding to the accusations, President Trump stated on social media that fuel prices would rapidly fall once the Iranian nuclear threat is destroyed. He noted that this is a small sacrifice for global security, and those who do not understand it are fools. The President had previously hinted that the war could last another four or five weeks. Republican National Committee spokesperson Kirsten Pels also defended the President's decisions, stating that Democrats are creating undue fear regarding fuel prices. Four years ago, during President Joe Biden's administration, due to the Russia-Ukraine war, the Biden administration also released oil from reserves when the price of a gallon of fuel rose to $5 by June 2022. However, according to polls, the majority of Americans dislike this war, and analysts point out that the economy and the war will become major political topics in the upcoming midterm elections.
