Old QR works - new registration is not yet available

The issuance of QR codes for the 'National Fuel Pass' via the https://fuelpass.gov.lk/ website has now commenced. For vehicles registered in 2022, the previous QR code remains valid, and to retrieve it again, one can visit this website, confirm the OTP received on their phone number, and obtain it.

However, if a phone number has changed or a vehicle number has changed, a new registration must be made, and the website states that new registration activities are expected to commence soon. 


Before proceeding with a new registration, several important points that the public must consider are mentioned. Accordingly, when registering, it is essential to correctly enter the chassis number, paying attention to both English capital and simple letters exactly as stated in the Motor Vehicle Registration Certificate. Additionally, when entering old vehicle numbers containing the character 'ශ්‍රී', only digits should be used in the relevant field; for example, '3 ශ්‍රී 1234' should be entered as '3 1234'.

The selection of the vehicle type within the system must also be made strictly in accordance with the classification mentioned in the Motor Vehicle Registration Certificate. These standardized classifications include motorcycles, three-wheelers, cars, vans (dual-purpose vehicles), buses, lorries, and special-purpose vehicles including agricultural vehicles. It is also emphasized that only one National Identity Card (NIC) number or passport number can be used for one vehicle and one mobile phone number. However, authorities have indicated that the ID number, name, or address provided by an individual for this registration process does not necessarily have to match the registered owner's information of the vehicle.

Registration of vehicles belonging to government institutions, companies, non-governmental organizations, or other associations must be done under the Business Registration Number (BRN) category. For registering multiple corporate vehicles, a unique code for the respective institution must be created using letters or digits under the National Identity Card number, and this code should be used commonly for all vehicles of the institution. Furthermore, under this category, it is possible to use one mobile phone number for multiple vehicles.
