
A fifty-three-year-old mother has been arrested by the police on charges of pawning gold jewelry provided by her son, who roams various parts of the island snatching gold chains from women, obtaining millions of rupees, and using that money to facilitate her son's drug use. A team of officers from the Crime Investigation Division of Wennappuwa Headquarters Police arrested the suspect in the North Kalutara area on the 13th of last month.
Her son has been robbing gold chains worn by young women and women walking on the street while traveling on a motorcycle.This criminal network was uncovered when the suspect attempted to snatch a gold chain from an eighteen-year-old university student who was traveling on a motorcycle in the Thambarawila area of Wennappuwa. A local youth apprehended him and handed him over to the police, and at that time, 16 grams of heroin were also taken into police custody from his possession. The police have confirmed that this suspect, a resident of the North Kalutara area, had previously been remanded in connection with gold chain snatching incidents and was recently released on bail by the court.
During interrogations of the arrested suspect, he revealed to the police that he hands over the gold chains he snatches to his mother, and she, in turn, pawns them and periodically provides him with the money needed for drug consumption. Accordingly, during interrogations of the arrested mother, information about five centers where the gold chains brought by her son were allegedly pawned has been uncovered. The police have now launched investigations to recover about ten gold chains pawned in this manner, and the police are further questioning the suspect, who is currently under a detention order.
