Saudi Arabia has warned that it will launch a severe attack on Iran in response to rising global energy prices caused by attacks targeting oil and gas production facilities in the Gulf region. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan stated that eight ballistic missiles launched by Iran towards the Saudi capital Riyadh were destroyed by air defense systems, and with an attack also occurring on one of its oil refineries, Saudi Arabia's patience with Tehran is running out.

He further emphasized that these pressures exerted by Iran would adversely affect them politically and morally, and that his country reserves the right to take military action if necessary.

This crisis emerged after Israel attacked the South Pars gas field, the world's largest gas reserve and a vital lifeline for Iran's economy. In response, Iran attacked Qatar's Ras Laffan plant, the world's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) production facility, and it is expected to take years to fully recover from the damage. Following this attack, global energy prices have risen by approximately 35 percent, and Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed Al-Ansari, condemned this as a dangerous violation of his country's sovereignty, while also strongly accusing Israel of targeting Iran's oil resources.

Although Saudi Arabia has not yet launched a direct attack on Iranian territory, the Saudi Foreign Minister issued a strong public warning on March 19, 2026, stating that Saudi Arabia reserves the right to take military action if Iranian attacks continue. Following a ballistic missile attack by Iran during a special meeting of Arab and Islamic foreign ministers in Riyadh, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud held a press conference and stated that Iran's actions would be politically and morally detrimental to itself. He emphasized that trust in Iran had completely broken down and that they should reconsider their strategies. He warned that the Saudi leadership would make appropriate decisions when the time came. Meanwhile, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has approved options for military retaliation, and with confirmed American support, Gulf states have held emergency meetings in Riyadh for regional coordination. The Saudi government had previously informed Iran via diplomatic channels on March 5 that if attacks continued, American forces would be allowed to launch attacks using Saudi bases.

These attacks targeting energy centers in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates have caused global energy prices to rise sharply. Saudi Arabia is heavily focused on protecting its oil infrastructure, such as Aramco and SAMREF, and has assured that it will take all necessary steps to protect its territory and citizens by purchasing additional anti-missile systems from Ukraine and other parties. As of March 20, 2026, Saudi Arabia still prefers a diplomatic solution but has strongly stated that its patience is limited. Further attacks targeting energy centers or Riyadh would lead to a direct response. However, Iran claims that it does not target civilian objectives and that its focus is solely on American and Israeli assets.
