Bahrain's Ministry of Interior has announced that a water desalination plant (sea water purification) in Bahrain was severely damaged by an Iranian drone attack on Sunday, March 8, 2026. This incident is reported amidst a series of widespread aerial attacks launched by Iran against neighboring countries in the Gulf region.

The Ministry further emphasized in its official statement that Iranian aggressors are randomly attacking civilian targets, and this drone attack has caused material damage to the water facility.

This marks the first time an Arab nation has publicly stated that Iran directly targeted its water infrastructure amidst the ongoing nine-day regional conflict involving Iran, Israel, the United States, and Gulf countries. Despite the physical damage to the plant caused by the attack, Bahrain's Water Resources Authority has confirmed that there has been no disruption to the country's overall water supply.

Bahrain and other Gulf countries heavily rely on hundreds of such plants located along the Persian Gulf coastline for their drinking water needs. Reports indicate that targeting essential civilian infrastructure in such a dry, water-scarce region could create a severe water crisis in the future, leading to serious humanitarian issues.

This attack is believed to be a recent retaliatory strike by Iran. Previously, an American attack on a water treatment plant on Qeshm Island in Iran disrupted water supply to about 30 villages. Iran accused the US of setting a bad precedent by attacking civilian water facilities and warned of an appropriate response. Accordingly, further reports indicate that this attack was launched in response to operations conducted by the US based out of the American Fifth Fleet's Juffair camp in Bahrain.

The conflict has escalated across the entire region due to Israel targeting Iranian oil facilities and Iran retaliating by striking targets in the Gulf region. The spread of these conflicts to countries like Bahrain and Kuwait highlights the vulnerable state of critical civilian infrastructure in the Gulf, and this crisis concerning regional security is rapidly evolving.
