The National Transport Commission has announced that despite the increase in diesel prices effective from midnight yesterday (09), the current bus fares will not change in any way. According to the latest price revision by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, the price of a liter of Auto Diesel has been increased by Rs. 22 and the price of a liter of Lanka Super Diesel by Rs. 24.
However, Dr. Nilan Miranda, Director General of the National Transport Commission, emphasizes that this fuel price hike does not have a sufficient impact to warrant a bus fare revision. Accordingly, he further pointed out that it has been decided to continue the current fare system charged from passengers as it is.
In contrast, the Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association states that bus fares must be increased in proportion to the increase in diesel prices. The president of the association, Mr. Gemunu Wijeratne, stated that representatives of their association will hold a special discussion today (10) to decide on the extent to which fares should be increased.
