A university student monk, who engaged in financial fraud by impersonating Energy Minister Mr. Kumara Jayakody through a fake WhatsApp account, has been arrested by the Narahenpita Central Criminal Investigation Bureau (CCIB).

The suspect monk falsely claimed that the funds were being collected to help school children displaced by Cyclone 'Ditwa'. Police investigations revealed that this financial fraud was carried out by sending messages to authorities in various institutions through the fake WhatsApp account created in the minister's name, thereby deceiving them.

The police acted on a complaint made by the Energy Minister's private secretary regarding this fraud. After conducting an extensive investigation, they arrested the suspect monk. At the time of his arrest, the monk was identified as being twenty-one years old and residing at a temple in Amunu Dasgiriya, Hatthota, Laggala area.

Arrangements have already been made to produce the arrested suspect monk before the court, and the Narahenpita Central Criminal Investigation Bureau will conduct further investigations into the incident.

A similar incident was reported last month. In that case, a monk from a temple in Pilimatalawa area was accused of collecting aid and money for people affected by Cyclone 'Ditwa' using the name of Deputy Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship, Mr. Chathuranga Abeyasinghe.
