During an interrogation about the current political situation with former politician Vasudeva Nanayakkara, who attended a function yesterday, he spoke with a positive attitude towards the government. The conversation that ensued is as follows.

How are you?
"I'm a bit unwell..."

What is your opinion about the government?

No, it's hopeful." "Isn't it?" "It seems this government intends to act in a way that prevents racism from emerging. That's a good start. And I see that this government has the potential to unite this country." "I believe they will do so."

Why do you say that?

"To do so, this government has already expressed its intention. And they have acted accordingly. Now, our President being a Sinhalese is not an obstacle to that. Even though he belongs to the Sinhalese ethnicity, he has clearly stated, 'We don't think or act in a racist way about anything.' The question now is how much opportunity there is to put his statement into action.

Because how much will opposing groups complicate this issue? Or how much will those who say that Sinhala identity should be prioritized allow this work to proceed, or will they disrupt it? That's what this depends on. I think the distance we've come is enough. We've worked so hard, put in so much effort. Now, with the new situation we have, considering the new people who have come to power, their background, and their ideology, we can have hope."

Don't you see their shortcomings?

"Let's put aside the shortcomings of the President and his team. Let's focus on their positive aspects. Let's view this optimistically." "This government is very different, isn't it? Different from every previous government. Let's try to lead this towards a positive change." "The main difference is that these are not people from the elite class. These are people from villages, from the lower-middle class. That is the biggest difference."

What do you say about Shiranthi and Namal being questioned today? They are friends, aren't they?

"They are personally close, yes. But when questions that they must answer are presented, they won't be able to avoid them. I can't do the work that the CID has to do myself, can I?" "If I did that, it would be showing too much favoritism, wouldn't it?"

You criticized this government before it came to power, didn't you?
"No... I have hopes for this government. Because we didn't think such a government would come to power at that time."
