Underworld threats to Ananda and Watagala

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched an investigation into incidents where life threats were made by underworld members against the Minister of Public Security, Mr. Ananda Wijepala, and Deputy Minister, Mr. Sunil Watagala. Facts regarding this matter have been revealed based on information received by an intelligence officer concerning a conversation that took place among several underworld members about the underworld in the Avissawella area and the underworld in the South.

After that intelligence officer informed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in charge of the Seethawaka Division, and after the SSP in charge of the division informed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the investigation was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Joining a press conference held yesterday (25) at the Police Media Division, Suhurupaya, Battaramulla, Police Media Spokesperson and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Udaya Kumara Wuttler stated that these investigations have been initiated based on intelligence received from the Avissawella Police Division.

Under the instructions of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Asanga Karawita, who is in charge of the Criminal Investigation and Financial Crimes Division, officers, including Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shani Abeysekara, who is in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, are conducting further investigations.
