A sixteen-year-old schoolgirl from the Kegalle area, who was preparing to sit for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination today (17th), gave birth to a child at Kegalle General Hospital on the 15th. A spokesperson for Kegalle General Hospital confirmed that this girl, who belongs to the Kegalle Police Division, had given birth in this manner.

The father of this schoolgirl passed away due to illness some time ago, and since then, the mother has taken on the burden of the family. She has taken care of the girl and her elder brother with the small income she earns by plucking tea leaves in small tea estates in the area. It is also reported that the girl's brother has currently gone to the Colombo area for work.

Explaining the facts to the hospital authorities, the student stated that she had previously maintained a romantic relationship with a schoolboy and later ended it. However, she further revealed yesterday (16th) that the child she gave birth to is a result of that same relationship.

When the girl experienced labor pains in the early morning of the 15th, the mother, thinking it was a sudden illness, immediately took steps to admit her to Kegalle General Hospital in a three-wheeler. It is also mentioned that the mother was completely unaware that her daughter was pregnant until the girl gave birth to the child that morning.

The newborn baby has currently been admitted to the premature baby unit of the maternity ward at Kegalle General Hospital. Furthermore, with the aim of providing this schoolgirl with the opportunity to sit for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination held today, the hospital staff discharged her from the hospital yesterday and sent her home.
