Model Peshani Ekanayake has filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), alleging that false and defamatory propaganda has been launched on social media, associating her name with high-ranking administrators of Sri Lanka Cricket. According to her, this false propaganda was initially spread on social media through a fake Facebook account maintained by an individual named Nadun Rajapaksa.
She points out that this post, which claims she has a connection with cricket administrators Shammi Silva, Ashley de Silva, and Jayantha Dharmadasa, has been shared by many other individuals.Commenting to the media regarding this incident, Peshani Ekanayake emphasized that she does not personally know the said cricket administrators. She stated that while she had tolerated various defamatory campaigns against her in the past when advocating for cricket, this time the situation has reached a limit where it severely impacts her personal life and family. She further stated that due to these false rumors, she has been under severe mental stress for several days, and in the face of this attempt to assassinate her character as a woman, she decided to seek legal recourse. She has handed over evidence, including information about the individuals who created and distributed the false posts, to the Criminal Investigation Department.
However, examining the public reactions on social media regarding this incident reveals that there are various critical opinions among the people regarding her actions. Many social media users questioned who she is and whether she is a public figure. Others pointed out that she herself had previously targeted cricketers, particularly former captain Dasun Shanaka, by posting sarcastic remarks and insulting him. Many accused individuals who are quick to insult or criticize others of hypocrisy when they cannot tolerate criticism directed at themselves and resort to the Criminal Investigation Department.
Furthermore, some individuals have raised suspicions about how she managed to watch cricket matches using VIP-level facilities (VIP Box) that are difficult for ordinary spectators to access. Additionally, social media users have expressed their displeasure, stating that using the Criminal Investigation Department, which is meant to solve serious crimes, fraud, and corruption in the country, for resolving such personal defamation or internet disputes is a waste of time. Overall, it is clear from the comments that the public's opinion is strongly focused on her past social media behavior and the belief that she is trying to gain publicity through this incident, rather than on her complaint itself.
