A twenty-three-year-old youth has died in a horrific accident when a motorcycle, speeding on the Walasmulla, Bowala road, lost control, veered off the road, and collided with a nearby electric pole. The accident occurred around 6:25 PM on the 30th, near Bowala Ranawiru Mawatha. Police stated that another twenty-one-year-old youth, who was also on the motorcycle, sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Walasmulla Base Hospital, from where he was transferred to Matara General Hospital for further treatment.
The unfortunate youth who lost his life in this accident was an unmarried young man named Gangoda Manage Dinesh Chamara, residing at Kapuhengoda, Pansala Road, Ethpitiya, Walasmulla. The young man injured and hospitalized in the accident is Ellawela Pahalage Pasindu Sandaruwan, a resident of Kosgahagoda, Bowala Road, Walasmulla.
Walasmulla Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, Mr. Sandasiri Ranasinghe, conducted the inquest into the sudden death of the deceased youth at Walasmulla Base Hospital on the 31st. During the inquest, Mr. Pramod Kaushalya Samaratunga, a twenty-five-year-old, who is the owner of the motorcycle involved in the accident, gave testimony describing the incident. He stated that the deceased Dinesh Chamara had borrowed his motorcycle because he wanted to ride it, as it was a high-speed model, and that he received news of the accident a short while later.
During the inquest, it was revealed that when they arrived at the accident scene, Dinesh was found lying near an electric pole in a patch of illuk grass on the left side of the road, with severe facial and head injuries, and the motorcycle was lying about 20 meters away. Although a group of neighbors took the injured person to the hospital in a three-wheeler, evidence confirmed that he had already passed away by then. Gangoda Manage Tharaka Romal, the younger brother of the deceased, also gave testimony.
The post-mortem examination was conducted by Judicial Medical Officer S.H.G. Pramudith of Tangalle Base Hospital, who concluded that the death was caused by severe damage to the skull and brain due to a road traffic accident. Under the instructions of Walasmulla Police Station OIC Chief Police Inspector Oshada de Silva, officers including the OIC of the Traffic Division are conducting further investigations into the matter.
