The Police Media Division has issued a statement informing the public about the actions to be taken when mobile phones are lost or stolen.
As the first step in taking action regarding a lost mobile phone, it is essential to deactivate the SIM card. This deactivation can be done through the service provider from whom the SIM card was obtained. By deactivating the SIM card, a third party will lose the opportunity to use the lost phone for illegal, anti-social, or illicit activities, and it will also facilitate the recovery of the phone.
When a mobile phone is lost or stolen, it is extremely important to mention its IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number when filing a complaint with the Sri Lanka Police.
The police point out that it is the responsibility of the owner to safely keep all service details, including the IMEI number, before the phone is lost or stolen. To find the IMEI number of a mobile phone, the short code *#06# can be used.
Furthermore, the Sri Lanka Police has introduced a new method for tracing mobile phones with the aid of software. The police further state that one can visit and register on the website ineed.police.lk for this purpose.
