A 53-year-old wife, accused of assaulting her businessman husband, strangling him to death with a saree, and then pushing his body from the upstairs to the ground, was arrested on suspicion by the Ragama Police Criminal Investigation Division the day before yesterday (24). The deceased businessman has been identified as 60-year-old Susantha Dhammika, a resident of Welipillawa, Ganemulla.
The initial information regarding this incident was reported to the Ragama Police by Ms. Suranji Isanka, the daughter of the deceased businessman Mr. Dhammika. She stated that her father had fallen from the upstairs of the house and died. According to that report, a team of Ragama police officers, including Police Sergeant Abeykoon (50195), immediately went to the house and commenced preliminary investigations.
During the preliminary police investigations, information revealed that this death was suspicious. Accordingly, an information report regarding the incident was submitted to the Welisara Court. After Welisara Acting Magistrate M. Gunawardena visited the house where the incident occurred and conducted an on-site inspection, he ordered the Judicial Medical Officer of the Ragama Teaching Hospital, North Colombo, to conduct a post-mortem examination regarding the death.
Based on the facts revealed during further investigations conducted by officers of the Ragama Police Criminal Investigation Division, the wife of the deceased businessman was arrested on suspicion. A senior police officer has stated to the Lankadeepa newspaper that information has been revealed that an argument occurred between the couple while they were upstairs in the house on the night of the incident.
Police sources and investigations have revealed that during the argument between the couple, the suspect wife assaulted her businessman husband. It is reported that she then took a saree she was wearing, strangled him to death, and subsequently pushed the body from the upstairs to the ground.
Investigations have confirmed that this was done with the intention of convincing others in the house that the husband had fallen from upstairs and died. Police sources state that all this information was revealed during the questioning of the businessman's wife, who was arrested on suspicion.
