The Criminal Investigation Division of Ragama Police has launched a special investigation into the mysterious death of a businessman residing in the Ganemulla, Welipillawa area. Although it is suspected that this person was murdered by strangling him with a sari pallu, the incident still remains a mystery as an open verdict was given regarding the death during the post-mortem examination.
The deceased in this incident is a 60-year-old father of three named Susantha Dharmika. His body was found by the police in an upstairs room of his house.According to information revealed during police investigations, the deceased businessman was heavily addicted to alcohol. It has been revealed that he had been married for about 33 years and had a son and a daughter; the son is employed, and the daughter resides at the ancestral home with her two children. There is evidence that the deceased often came home drunk, started arguments with his wife, and assaulted her. On the day of the incident, he also came home drunk and had a confrontation with his wife, and at that time, only the daughter was at home, while the son had gone to work.
Investigations have revealed that this argument between the husband and wife escalated to the upstairs, and since the father coming home drunk and shouting with the mother was a common occurrence, the daughter, who was downstairs, did not pay much attention to it. After a short while, the mother came downstairs and continued with her usual household chores. When the daughter's children came home at night and asked about their grandfather, the mother informed them that he was upstairs. One small granddaughter went upstairs and tried to wake her grandfather, but he did not respond, so she informed her mother again.
Later, the businessman's daughter immediately went upstairs and checked on her father, and seeing phlegm flowing from his mouth, she became frightened and screamed. With her scream, neighbors gathered, and the son, who had gone to work, was also informed. Subsequently, when the 1990 Suwasariya ambulance service was called and an examination was conducted, the medical officers confirmed that the homeowner had already passed away. At this point, due to certain changes observed in the behavior of the deceased's wife, police officers became suspicious of her.
During further investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigation Division under the guidance of Senior Superintendent of Police Nuwan Asanka, in charge of the Kelaniya Division, and the direction of the Ragama Police Station OIC, information has been revealed that this murder was committed by strangling the husband with a sari pallu after an argument with him, who had come home drunk, escalated. Investigating officers have succeeded in finding the suspected sari piece used for the murder, which had been burnt, and these pieces have been taken into custody as evidence.
After recording statements from the homeowner's two children regarding the incident, the suspect wife was arrested and, after being produced before the Welisara Magistrate's Court, was ordered to be remanded for 14 days. An open verdict was given during the post-mortem examination held before the Welisara Acting Magistrate regarding the cause of death, and the exact cause of death is to be determined after receiving medical reports. Until then, Ragama Police states that this death remains a mystery and that further investigations will continue.
